Tuscany, Tuscany Coast
A stone's throw from the beautiful Viareggio beach
Outdoor swimming pool with a poolside bar and towel service
A short drive from Pisa, Lucca and the Apuan Alps Park
As Italy holidays go, is there anywhere more romantic than Tuscany? Located just a short distance from Pisa, the Grand Hotel Royal on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea is one of the icons of the region. This beach hotel comes with a wealth of star-studded history - it was once a favourite of royalty, artists and celebrities in the early 20th century.
Sumptuous both inside and out, the iconic 4* hotel is located very close to the beach. Here you’ll find complimentary deckchairs and parasols - so we won’t be surprised if you want to spend all your time soaking up the luxurious Tuscan sun. The hotel’s luscious gardens offer a welcome respite from the afternoon heat and are well worth a visit. Enjoy an early evening aperitivo, or take dinner in the gardens, accompanied by bi-weekly live piano music. Lovely!
With an air of faded elegance this beautiful, four-star hotel in Tuscany has been one of our firm favourites for many years. It is ideally located for the beach and the lovely seafront promenade which is atmospheric and particularly lively in the evenings and weekends with music until late.
Grand Hotel Royal has 114 rooms and caters to all our Citalia guests. Reduced rates for children aged between 2-12 apply. Saturday arrivals and departures only in high season (mid June - end August). Minimum stay of 7 nights mid May - mid September, other dates have a minimum stay of 3 nights.
Italy’s gastronomy is not world-famous for nothing! After all, this is the country that has given us pastas galore, pizza to die for and creamy, melt-in-your-mouth risottos. Grand Hotel Royal’s guests are surely in for a culinary treat when they enjoy the regional specialities served in the beautiful, on-site restaurant.
The Lobby bar is open from 6pm to 12:30am and has an extensive drinks menu.
Please note that the hotel requests that beach wear is not to be worn in the lobby bar.

Italy’s cultural legacy precedes it, so those who are looking to imbibe in some culture during their break will not be disappointed. Viareggio is famous for being packed with stunning Art Deco architecture, as well as being just a short train ride from the Cinqueterre, Florence, Pisa and Lucca. We say grab a bike, get in the saddle and explore!
Payable locally, approx. €5 per hour or €10 per day
Tuscany may be famous for its rolling hills and stupendous views, but the region’s often overlooked seaside is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. Viareggio, in the northwest of the country, is a place to take your foot off the pedal and enjoy life in the slow lane. And we say, why not join them! Don your best sunglasses, brush up on your Italian and enjoy a passeggiata (stroll) with the locals on the promenade. Admire the art deco architecture, splash the cash in one of the seaside boutiques or simply sit in one of the many bars and restaurants and watch the world go by.
If, like us, you enjoy a gentle bike ride to discover the region then you’re in luck. Viareggio boasts a great cycle path for exploring the seafront. If Tuscany’s big hitters - Florence, Pisa and Lucca - are calling, then it’s so easy to jump on a train from the local train station - just a 20 minute walk away from the Grand Hotel Royal.
Viareggio is also famous for the Puccini Festival, held in summer, and the eponymous carnival, held from late January to early March. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during these times, we promise you’re in for a treat!
