Sitting on a garden bench and looking to the surprisingly pretty peak of Mount Etna, surrounded by flitting butterflies and lush palms, you’d struggle to believe that you’re just a short walk from Taormina’s energetic centre. Yet the Villa Comunale Gardens truly are, and are perfect for a moment’s rest during a busy day seeing the sights. At the centre of this verdant patch is the remarkable Villa Comunale itself – an elaborate, many-tiered pavilion, built by the eccentric Lady Trevelyan for her many pets. It’s equal parts surreal and breathtaking, and well worth the short walk from the town’s main street.
Journey by rail through some of Italy's most iconic destinations, combining the ancient city of Rome with visits to the beautiful seaside towns of Sorrento and Taormina.
