Basilica di Santa Lucia

Rising majestically over terracotta rooftops, the Basilica di Santa Lucia is surely one of Syracuse’s most beautiful sights. Located in Ortigia’s Piazza Duomo, right at the heart of the island’s historic centro storico, this impressive 18th-century church is a marvel of Baroque architecture with roots as far back as Norman times. Standing at more than 80 feet in height, the basilica is instantly recognisable for its gleaming white façade, adorned with elaborate flourishes.

The interior is equally impressive, with ornate Baroque columns rising to lofty, sunlit ceilings, and numerous frescoes many centuries old. The most important of these is the ‘Burial of Saint Lucy’ – an enormous 17th-century artwork painted by master artist Caravaggio. Make sure you also spend time exploring the square in front of the church during your visit, as there are plenty more wonders waiting to be discovered.
