A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, the Sacro Monte di Orta (sacred mountain of Orta) is a Roman Catholic religious site where 20 chapels dating as far back as the 16th century stand, depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi through well-preserved murals and sculptures.
Located in a nature reserve a short walk above the village of Orta San Giulio, this peaceful spot is the perfect way to spend a few hours admiring the baroque architecture, along with the beautiful views down over the lake and surrounding mountains.
