The Toirano Caves can be found in Savona. Although they aren’t often considered the most beautiful caves they are incredibly impressive and give a fascinating insight into prehistoric times. Crystals and stalactites can be seen throughout the length of the caves, perhaps the most impressive is the one nick named after the leaning tower of Pisa which bears a resemblance to the iconic tower.
The most popular cave is the Grotte Della Basura, thousands of years ago bears hibernated in here. This was proved after the discovery of bones and scratches on the walls. Impressions of hands and feet can also be found in the ‘Hall of Mysteries’ as well as pottery, showing that pre historic men also lived here. Visiting these caves is truly a journey back in time. It’s worth noting that there are quite a few stairs to manage and surfaces can be wet and slippery so sensible clothing and shoes should be worn.
