Bologna’s best-kept secret, the Basilica di Santo Stefano, is a holy complex of seven different churches, designed in homage to Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Dating from as far back as the 4th century, this impressive basilica features many important points of interest. There’s Pilate’s Courtyard – one of the most revered spaces thanks to the 8th-century fountain at its centre, the Benedictine cloister, which is often listed as one of Italy’s finest Romanesque courts, and the ancient graces of Vitale and Agricola.
Just outside, the pretty Piazza Santo Stefano provides mesmerising views and is one of the city’s most atmospheric piazzas, complementing your visit to the basilica.
Opening hours: 8am – 7pm daily, with closure during religious services.
