The island of Ischia sits out in the Bay of Naples, about an hour’s boat ride from Sorrento. This full-day excursion takes you across to the island by hydrofoil, landing on Ischia’s volcanic shores mid-morning.
You’ll start off with a bus tour of the island, which is famous for its thermal spas, golden sandy beaches (something of a rarity in the area) and lush landscapes. Your tour will cover most of the island, so keep your camera at the ready to capture its spectacular scenery along the way.
Once you’ve scoped out the island and stopped for lunch, you’ll be dropped off at the famous Mortella Gardens. Beautifully landscaped and stretching over 16,000 square metres, the gardens are home to pools, sculptures and fountains, plus thousands of rare plant species from around the world.
Previously considered the most beautiful private gardens in Italy (they’re built in the grounds of the late English composer Sir William Walton’s home), they’re now open for the public to enjoy too. You’ll have between two and three hours here, so there’s plenty of time to explore these lush, peaceful gardens.
You will head back to the port to catch the 4pm hydrofoil back to Sorrento, where a minibus will be waiting to take you to your hotel.
We say: “If I had to choose one place to visit on Ischia, it would be La Mortella Gardens. When you arrive, start at the top and then work your way down.” Linda Kulka, Personal Travel Planner
