Topping travellers’ bucket lists for years, Sorrento is one of Italy's must-see destinations. It has been drawing the jet set for almost 200 years - Henrik Ibsen wrote Peer Gynt here, Wagner and Nietzche had a well-publicised philosophical debate in the Piazza Tasso and Byron, Shelley and Dickens all passed through on their Grand Tours.
Lemons are the name of the game in Sorrento. The region is famous for them, so expect zesty flavours wherever you go. The citrus fruit is everywhere - on the beautiful, handmade, hand painted ceramics (which are very lovely gifts to take home) to the risottos, pastas and yes, even pizzas that originate from the area. All are delicious, especially when washed down with a glass of ubiquitous limoncello.
You won’t have to go far from Sorrento’s shores to tick the sights off your to-do list. The Pompeii ruins are less than an hour away (and easily reachable by public transport), Positano and Amalfi are just 15 and 30 km, while Capri, the most iconic of Italian islands, is a short ferry ride away. For those who want to delve into the region’s wealth of cultural assets, Naples is only an hour by public transport. And if you do really want to see it all, the Amalfi Drive, connecting Sorrento and Amalfi, is a narrow road along the high cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers some of the best views we’ve ever seen.
