Vomero is reached by a funicular, a mode of transport quite common in the city, and it is an upmarket and leafy district of this gritty city. It features alfresco cafes, refined restaurants and many shops. It is very atmospheric, especially at the weekend when the locals gather . The centre of this bustling district is Piazza Vanvitelli . The Certosa di San Martino has frescoes, paintings and sculpture in a former monastery and the Castel Sant’Elmo fortress has wonderful views over the city and the Bay of Naples.
