Standing tall over the bay of Naples, it is hard to imagine Mount Vesuvius destroying four settlements at its base in a catastrophic eruption, but in 79AD this was all too real for locals. This excursion allows you to understand the series of events that caused the destruction and life before the towns were buried.
Herculaneum, the ancient summer resort was destroyed by the famous eruption in 79AD. Although less famous than its neighbour (Pompeii) the archaeological site of Herculaneum is worth a visit. It's said that Herculaneum is better preserved than Pompeii, as it was sealed by lava instead of ash. Here you will find fascinating examples of unspoiled mosaic tiled floors and frescoed villas.
