Set above the beautiful Palazzo di Duomo, Amalfi’s elegant cathedral is one of the region’s most impressive historic sights, dominating the town of Amalfi from its lofty position. Rising high above the town, the cathedral’s dramatic campanile is the most visible feature of the building and is also the oldest, having been built in the 12th century.
More recent but no less impressive is the cathedral’s marble facade, started in 1891 after the original collapsed. Head through this ornate front and you’ll be immersed in history, with the cathedral boasting a 13th-century wooden crucifix and an important frescoed ceiling painted by Andrea dell’Asta. Situated just moments from the beachfront, Amalfi Cathedral is one of the town’s must-visit sights, and is well worth exploring.
