The Godfather (1972)

The 18th-century Baroque Castello degli Schiavi, located near Catania and Mount Etna, served as a key filming location for The Godfather. This historic castle, now a private residence, occasionally opens its doors to the public, offering a glimpse into the world of the Corleone family. Additionally, the film shot several scenes in Savoca, a small pedestrian-only town near Forza d’Agró.

Gladiator (2000)

Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia, with its golden fields and cypress trees was used, as the setting for Maximus’ ‘Spanish’ home in Gladiator. The area’s breathtaking scenery made it a standout location in the film.

Hannibal (2001)

Florence’s San Niccolò District, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, became the hauntingly beautiful setting for Hannibal. The area’s old-world charm and mysterious feel made it the perfect backdrop for the psychological thriller.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

In The Spy Who Loved Me, Roger Moore’s Bond pays a visit with Agent Anya Amasova to Costa Smeralda in northern Sardinia. The iconic Hotel Cala di Volpe, perched dramatically on the cliffs, served as a fantastic backdrop for Bond’s Mediterranean adventures.

Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig’s Bond finds solace in the breathtaking Lake Como, with scenes filmed at the historic Villa del Balbianello near Lenno. Later, the Villa la Gaeta in Sant’ Abbonido becomes the setting for one of Bond’s most memorable lines.

Spectre (2015)

In Spectre, Bond races through the ancient streets of the Vatican City, Monti and Prati, before speeding along Gianicolo Hill and plunging into the Tiber River. This high-octane chase showcases some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks while evading the shadowy Spectre organisation.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

Sardinia's coastline took centre stage in The Little Mermaid, with key scenes filmed at Rena Majore Beach in Aglientu and Castelsardo, which doubled as Eric’s castle. The island’s crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs brought Ariel’s story to life in a truly magical way.

Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday brought Rome’s iconic landmarks to the big screen, from the Spanish Steps to the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) at the Church of Santa Maria. The film also showcased the lavish Palazzo Brancaccio, which is open to the public for visitation.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

In The Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort orchestrates an illegal pump-and-dump scheme from the comfort of his superyacht before he capsizes the ship in his onward journey to Monaco. In the background of this scene, you can see the rolling hills and colourful houses of glamorous Portofino, a firm favourite of the rich and famous and a hot spot for luxury yachts.

Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace (1999)

Just 30km from Naples, the 18th-century Royal Palace of Caserta stood in as Queen Amidala’s royal residence in The Phantom Menace. Its opulent halls and lavish gardens added the perfect regal touch to the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

Villa del Balbianello, overlooking Lake Como, became a romantic hideaway for Anakin and Padme in Attack of the Clones. The historic villa also hosted their secret wedding.  A favourite among filmmakers the villa has appeared in other Hollywood hits like Casino Royale
