At Citalia we have over 95 years’ experience and over this time we have discovered a number of Italian hidden gems that are off the beaten track. We have travelled the country top to bottom, bottom to top, and everything in between to bring you our extensive knowledge and secret treasures.

Without further ado, introducing the latest in our Hidden Italy series, Citalia’s Choice for February…NAPLES!

The ancient capital of Campania, Naples is located in the shadow of the mighty Mount Vesuvius. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and culture vultures are in for a real treat. Here are some of our favourite things about Naples for you to enjoy on your next Italian adventure.

Catacombe di San Gennaro

Discover what lies beneath Naples with a trip to the Catacombs of San Gennaro. Learn about the patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro, and the history of the paleo-Christian burial site. Arranged on two levels, the catacombs take you back to the 2nd century AD. Preserving some of the earliest Christian paintings in southern Italy, the upper catacomb dates back to the 3rd century AD. This turned into a pilgrimage site after the remains of San Gennaro were placed here in the 5th century. Enjoy the underground basilicas and the beautiful architecture and frescoes on your trip underneath Naples.

Teatro di San Carlo

Enjoy a night at the opera at Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest opera house in the world. A magical experience, Teatro di San Carlo bears the grandeur of its time with its beautiful architecture and regal colour choice. Enjoy magnificent performances as the acoustics make their way around the theatre. Built in 1737, the first king of Bourbon, Charles III set the vision and Giovanni Antonio Medrano, a Spanish architect brought the design to life. Sit back, relax and be amazed by the wonderful performances – a night to remember!

Spaccanapoli

A narrow street crossing through the centre of Naples, Spaccanapoli takes its origin from the Greco-Roman era. Translating as “Naples splitter”, the street appears to literally split the city in half. Stretching for around 2km, you’ll find cafes, bars and restaurants spilling out into the street as well as small boutiques and souvenir shops. Have a wander down the street and take in the atmosphere, stop for a bite to eat and browse through the local shops and boutiques.

Via San Gregorio Armeno

Perhaps the city’s most famous alleyway, Via San Gregorio Armeno is tucked away and is renowned for selling kitsch nativity souvenirs. Make your way to the San Gregorio Armeno church and enjoy its lush 17th century garden filled with lovely citrus trees. This charming and historic street has a tradition that dates back a long time. Once home to a temple for the Roman Goddess Ceres, her followers used to bring her small terracotta figurines that were handmade in workshops nearby. Fast forward to today and these small figurines now make up nativity scenes across the country.

Pompeii

A trip to Naples is not complete without a visit to nearby Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE and covered the city in ash and other volcanic debris. Once a thriving Roman city, all that is left are ruins, which were discovered in the late 16th century. The remains of the city walls stretch around 2 miles and surround 163 acres that was once home to grand public buildings, an amphitheatre and luxurious villas. Take a wander around this wonderful archaeological site and learn about life in the ancient world.
