Hidden Italy: Liguria

At Citalia we have 95 years’ experience and over this time we have discovered a number of Italian hidden gems that are off the beaten track. We have travelled the country top to bottom, bottom to top, and everything in between to bring you our extensive knowledge and secret treasures.

Without further ado, introducing the latest in our Hidden Italy series, Citalia’s Choice for September…LIGURIA!

Stretching along the French border to Tuscany, the stunning Liguria offers a year-round mild climate. The Liguria region is known as the Italian Riviera, with its historic fishing villages, lush vegetation, monumental mountains, and exquisite food. Here are some of our favourite things about Liguria for you to enjoy on your next Italian adventure.

Aquatic Adventures at Acquario di Genova

An aquatic adventure awaits at Acquario di Genova. It is one of the largest aquariums in Europe, covering over 27,000sqm. You’re in for a treat with a chance to meet over 15,000 marine animals at the old harbour of Genova. Some of the mesmerising marine animals include Gentoo Penguins and Bottlenose Dolphins. This is the perfect family day out with the option to learn even more from the onsite marine biologist. The Acquario di Genova has also created the 'Biosphere', which is a man-made tropical ecosystem where you can explore the amazing fauna and flora that flourish within the glass dome.

History Hunting in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre invites all history lovers to take in all its charm. As a protected UNESCO Heritage Site, these five ancient fishing villages offer picture-perfect history with traditional pastel-coloured houses hanging off the cliffs of the coast. What makes these villages so special is the untouched feel. You can’t reach all the villages by car, but walking is possible along the Sentiere Azzuro. Alternatively, you may arrive by boat or train. Boat trips are one of the best ways to see the coast. It's quick and offers an experience in itself. A walk in each village is fascinating, with traditional family-run businesses and ruins waiting to be explored.

Liguria's Blue Flag Beaches

If you’re after an Italian beach getaway, Liguria has more Blue Flag beaches than any other region in Italy. Like all beaches in Italy, Liguria’s sandy shores vary significantly. Some take a few steps to reach one end to the other while others could take hours. It all depends on what you’re looking for. From the gorgeous Portofino to the scenic sand of Alassio, Liguria’s coast is over 200 miles long, providing ample opportunity to soak up the sun and enjoy the seaside. Just be sure to find your spot early in the day, summer sees visitors flocking to the shore.

Flawless Piazza de Ferrari

Piazza de Ferrari is a must-visit while in Genoa. Located in the city centre, it has a fantastic atmosphere that gives you a true feel of the city. The Piazza de Ferrari is a popular meeting place, with some of the largest events in Genoa taking place on its doorstep. The Piazza was named after the Duke of Galliera, Raffaele De Ferrari, who was instrumental in the expansion of Genoa’s port. Today, history and incredible architecture surround the Piazza, but the magnificent fountain in the centre of Piazza de Ferrari steals the show.
