Where is Pompeii?

Pompeii is located in southern Italy, near the Gulf of Naples. It lies about 15 miles southeast of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. This ancient Roman city was famously buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, making it one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. Pompeii is easily accessible and is often included in trips to nearby Naples, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast. It’s a perfect day trip destination, allowing you to explore ancient history while enjoying some of Italy’s most beautiful locations.

When Did Mount Vesuvius Erupt in Pompeii?

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius occurred on August 24, 79 AD. This catastrophic event released a deadly combination of molten rock, volcanic ash, and hot gas, which buried the city under several feet of debris. The eruption lasted for several days, and thousands of people who were unable to escape perished. Pompeii remained lost to history for nearly 1,700 years before it was rediscovered in 1748. The eruption of Vesuvius remains one of the most studied volcanic events in history.

The History of Pompeii

Pompeii was founded around the 6th century BC by the Samnites, an ancient Italian tribe, and later became a Roman city by the 1st century BC. During its peak, Pompeii was a thriving city with a population of approximately 11,000 to 15,000 residents. The city boasted grand homes, bustling marketplaces, impressive public buildings, and well-maintained roads.

How to Get to Pompeii from Naples

The easiest way to reach Pompeii is the Circumvesuviana train that runs between Naples and Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana train line departs frequently from the Naples Central Station and takes you directly to the Pompeii Scavi station. From the station, you can walk to the ruins or catch a bus to the Mount Vesuvius National Park

You can also arrive by car where there are plenty of parking areas near the entrance to the ruins.

Things to Bring When Visiting Pompeii

When visiting Pompeii, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few items to bring to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience:

Comfortable shoes: The archaeological site is vast and features uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential.

Sunscreen and a hat: Much of the site is uncovered, so protection from the sun is crucial, especially in the summer months.

Water bottle: It can get hot during the summer, so staying hydrated is key.

Camera:
There are countless photo opportunities, from ancient frescoes to the famous volcanic ash casts of Pompeii’s residents.
